top: thrifted // skirt: American Apparel // necklace: Target
I only wear this shirt around people I trust. It's kind of weird, because it's just a tank top with a cat on it. Seems like it would be a pretty predictable thing for me to wear, right? Somehow, I still feel like people won't understand that I'm wearing a tank top with a cat wearing a crown. What does that even mean? I don't know. But here I am wearing it on my blog for you all to see.

Cat on my neck, cat on my shirt, cat hair on my skirt. It's a catastic outfit. Caterrific!

As a distraction from my Pretty Little Liars kick (which was supposed to be a distraction from my other distractions), here's a collection of things pulling my heart strings this week.

Floral Loafers
I've been having trouble getting into the loafer trend. Not because they aren't a wonderfully versatile shoe, but because I can't make up my mind about what I want. Cue the floral loafer. It literally transcends seasons and is super comfy year-round.
PS. While I was searching for floral loafers for this post, I came across a MAJOR FIND:
My most sought after item now comes in a knock off! On the left, you see the ridiculous real deal Charlotte Olympia Kitty Flat for $660. To the right is the $21.20 version. Don't mind if I do!

Grammar Art
I may be done with school, but that doesn't mean I've no need for a little grammar in my everyday life. Who says classroom art has to stay in the classroom? I would love to have any of these hanging in my future office apartment (or around my neck!). Maybe I've been looking at my Facebook newsfeed too much, I can't help but think these would make fabulous gifts to first-year teachers setting up their classrooms for the new school year.

DIY Thank You Notes
After a summer of job interviews, graduation gifts, and birthday parties, I've realized how convenient it would be to have a stash of thank you notes ready and waiting. Everyone appreciates receiving thanks and we definitely love getting mail, so why not add the extra touch of a handmade card to push your gratitude into the special memory territory of your recipient's mind. Whether it's for your potential employer or your mother-in-law, they will remember the extra effort you gave. Plus, who doesn't love a good craft? I'm thinking metallic sequins and rubber stamps for mine.

It's no secret that I love BFFs. This week, my heart beats for Taylena: Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. I adore them both as individuals, so my love is only amplified when I see them together. They both rock the industry without letting it rock them back. I'm all about positive influences and strong support systems, which is exactly what T-Swift and Selena provide for each other. (If you don't believe me, look how excited they are to perform on stage together!)

Where's your heart hanging out this week?

where my heart is

Six-year-old Alana Thompson, more commonly known as Honey Boo Boo Child, of TLC's Toddlers and Tiaras fame is my very most favorite person on television. My feelings towards Honey Boo Boo are not sarcastic, ironic, or condescending. Rather, Honey Boo Boo inspires me in a very real way.

Unlike other pageant contestants on Toddlers and Tiaras, Honey Boo Boo always shows the judges exactly who she is on stage. If they don't like it, they can rank her lower, but she never gives up. Even more notably, Alana's family supports her in victory and defeat and encourages her to pick herself back up. June, better known as Mama, takes such pride in her daughter for being bold and trying her best, even when the judges don't recognize Alana's greatness. Mama has never made Honey Boo Boo feel guilty for not winning a pageant--something pageant parents on Toddlers and Tiaras are filmed doing again and again.

Seeing that Alana wants to be successful at pageants, Mama brought in an etiquette coach to help her feel more prepared for the next contest. Honey Boo Boo and her sister Pumpkin sat down with the etiquette coach and learned about table manners. However, the coach let her prejudice get in the way of being an effective teacher for the girls, saying things like "Well, I hope that works out for you," and "That is probably the height of rudeness." Without ever explaining why the lessons might be important, Pumpkin and Alana had no reason to care or learn anything. Knowing that her younger sister might get the wrong impression from the etiquette coach, Pumpkin was adamant about holding her ground and reinforcing the idea that she won't let anyone's judgment change her.

Honey Boo Boo is surrounded by strong, positive women. She is encouraged to be bright and outspoken, instead of being silenced or made to feel dumb for making observations and asking questions. Honey Boo Boo's family nurtures her interests while giving her space to grow. When the issue of weight comes up in Honey Boo Boo's household, she is reminded that the number on the scale reflects how full of happiness and love she is, not the weight of the shame others try to force on her.

I don't have to be quiet to be beautiful. I don't have to wait for someone to tell me that I'm a winner to know that I'm valuable. I can celebrate parts of my body that other people are ashamed of and maybe other people will start to celebrate them too.

oh, honey

chambray: F21 // dress: Urban Outfitters (old) // sandals and bag: American Eagle

If I were 22 in 1992, I like to think I would be wearing something like this today. Maybe swap the sandals for a pair of black boots, but pretty close otherwise.

Looking back at my last few posts makes it seem like all I wear is chambray. I wish I could tell you that was just a coincidence, but I've been living in soft denim shirts all summer and it obviously shows. Whether I'm heading out to the ocean, a job interview, or a night of karaoke, I know I'll be looking fly in my chambray. What can I say, I love basics!

When I left work today, traffic was backed up all the way to the office. Sigh. Instead of cursing Austin's drivers for 40 minutes, I took an impromptu in a nearby park I found. Thanks, East Austin! Then I just hopped back into my car and headed to happy hour. No complaints from me today!

chambray and purse: American Eagle // skirt (which is actually green, not yellow!): Anthropologie (save spend splurge) // shoes: Ross (similar) // belt: Target

While Avril Lavigne is off planning her wedding to Chad Kroeger (What? Barf!), I've been doing a little of my own planning. Today I went to the Marketo Social Marketing Rockstar Tour. I'm not sure what I intended to actually learn during the short conference, but I left feeling more motivated than educated. Not too bad, Marketo. Though a lot of the speakers' content didn't directly apply to my current ventures, it was nice to be surrounded by socially savvy colleagues and I opened my mind to a productive brainstorming session. I'm excited to put some of my ideas into play in the near future, both in my work for Andy and in my personal branding.

After the conference, I reconnected with a couple of friends from college over queso to exchange tales of summer job searching. Hearing my frustrations reflected back from a couple of classmates that I really respect definitely eased the stress I've been feeling. It's okay to not have my dream job yet. It's okay to try a bunch of things, take something away from the experience, and then move on. It's okay to be selective when your happiness is on the line. More than anything, I just want to be happy, so that's where I'm setting my sights.

setting my sights

Happy Wednesday, my loves! You've almost made it. It's crazy how the months this year seem to be flying by, yet the work week is as slow as ever. To help you muster the strength to finish out this week, here are some things I am loving right now.

1. Lists for reference
Did you know I graduated? I did. I've always used lists to help me get things done, but since graduating, I make lists for everything. Sometimes they are wistful and sometimes they are practical, but mostly they are inspired by the fact that I don't have to go to school anymore and can do whatever I want. The third list is one of mine, in case you wondered...or wanted a model for your own middle of the year resolutions.

2. Cat sketches
Because cats and sketches.

3. Best Coast
So, I know I'm two years late to the Best Coast party. There's this other band called Beach House that I really don't like and, for two years, every time someone asked me if I liked Best Coast, I said no...because I was confused. It's not my fault. Best Coast...Beach similar, right? Anyway, different bands. And Best Coast really is the best. If you don't believe me (or even if you do) watch the video above. It's a short film directed by Drew Barrymore starring all of my favorite celebrities (AKA Chloe Moretz, Donald Glover, Alia Shawkat, Shailene Woodley, and Miranda Cosgrove). Oh, and the soundtrack is three of the best Best Coast songs. Just watch it. And listen. Definitely employ those senses.

4. Song lyric tattoos
No, you won't see Beatles lyrics lining my forearms, but it's not unlikely that I'll ink a little Regina or Rilo reminder somewhere on my frame. In the meantime, I'll just be inspired.

Good stuff, right? Now go buy yourself a snow cone in my honor. You'll want wedding cake flavor, trust me.

where my heart is

I go away for one week and the whole Internet explodes. Am I right?

First the Spice Girls are relevant other places than the wall of my apartment

then Miley gets the cutest haircut of all time

Helen Gurley Brown dies at 90

and Austin, TX has its hottest day of Summer 2012.

Well, while the rest of the world was obviously still turning, here's what I've been up to.

Hanging out with my best squirrel friends

Single-handedly starting a dance party

I know what you're thinking. This is the most glamorous beach trip blog post you've ever seen. Alright, well, I intended to do a better job of documenting pretty things for my pretty blog, but sometimes you have to put the camera phone down and look at life through your own set of eyes.

If you're really jonesing for pretty pictures, head on over to my Tumblr and check back here later. I'm playing catch up in my life, as well as on my blog, so keep an eye out for outfit posts coming soon.

catch up
