resolutions for 2014

Happy New Year, dears! I hope you all had a little bit of bubbly and lot of fun last night to ring in 2014. I have a good feeling about this year. It will be my second year since graduating college, my third year dating Dago, my third year at the agency where I work, and my third year blogging. A lot changed in 2013, and I can't even predict what changes I'll come into this year. What I can do is give myself some resolutions to work toward this year to help make it a great one.

Crafting // Near the end of 2013, I cautiously began to craft. I glued gems to a sweatshirt and called it a DIY. I painted something to hang in our living room. I even embroidered a Christmas ornament for Dago to hang on our tree. And you know what? I liked it! I chose projects that focused on busying my fingers from the keyboard of my phone and computer, and that got my eyes away from a screen. Now that I'm working 40 hours a week at a desk with three screens, I want to make a point to spend as much time away from technology as possible. Realistically, I'm on my computer and phone even when I'm not working, so I want to add a hobby or two that don't require a screen to help me disconnect while doing something productive. I want to paint and cross-stitch til my heart's content, and maybe explore some other forms of crafting that make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Writing // I mentioned a few months back that I've started seriously thinking about the book I want to write. Since I'm in a more stable place with work and my blog, I finally have space to sort out what I'd like to write about and how I want it to look. Sometimes I'm falling asleep and I start making lists of the stories I want to tell, and it's fun to come up with different directions for a book to go. This year, I want to make some progress on writing, aside from my blog, in the form of effort towards a book.

Saving // Now that I have a full-time job with a salary, it's about time I start putting money away! Unfortunately, this may or may not be possible after I start making my third set of loan payments in April, but until then, I want to do my best to put money aside. I haven't had a savings since I had loan money when I was in college that I used for rent, so I'm really excited to have my very own savings account of money that I earned and saved.

Hopefully I do a better job with my resolutions this year than I did last year. What are you resolving to do in 2014?

  1. These are solid resolutions. I like them because they're do-able and realistic and important to a healthy and happy life. I'm coming to realize that I like resolutions that are more than just a bucket list of ideas. Happy New Year, Nicole!

  3. I'm still working my way through my birthday list, but generally I'm really wanting to focus on healthy living and active living, and taking some time to unwind and relax at the end of the day away from the computer or television to keep me from hoarding stress in my back and shoulders. There are lots of different savings plans out there, so you really just have to find a system that works for you. I haven't been able to save on my stipend, but I used to have a certain sum pulled from my checking account each month and put into a separate savings account via ING Direct, now called Capital One 360. I found having a separate place for only savings was really helpful because I never looked at it so I was never really tempted to spend that money until I needed it. The 5 dollar savings plan sounds interesting if you use cash fairly regularly. Good goals for the year!

  4. Those are great resolutions! I am constantly on my phone or computer and I should really start spending time away from the screens, at least for part of my day. Do you know what type of book you want to write? Fiction or non-fiction? I bet it's a lot of hard work but super rewarding when finished. Good luck and happy new year!

  7. I totally love what you said about finding a hobby you can do to busy your hands and your mind that doesn't involve technology in an effort to unplug. I can totally relate. On a recent vacation I unplugged about 90% from technology for a whole week and it felt really good, and I want to make more of an effort to do that in my daily life this year. I also admire your resolution about savings. You go girl!
