life lately

dress: Forever 21 // scarf: inherited from my aunt // shoes: old Target
I had kind of a crazy last several days, so I thought I'd ease into the week with a little recap of my life lately. I first want to say thank you to everyone who sent their love and positive thoughts to my family last week. My aunt's passing is a huge loss to my family, and it's wonderful to know that I have the support of friends and blog readers to help me be strong for my family.

These photos were taken by Dago on my birthday. We ended the night at a little park I found recently by our apartment. The weather was completely perfect, and Dago asked if I wanted to pose for a few outfit photos for the blog. He's so good to me.

I woke up on my birthday and went to the post office, the DMV to renew my license, and to vote. So far, 24 is my my most grown up year yet! My big plans for the day actually weren't my plans, but rather a celebration for my mom. She's been working on getting her GED and spent the last 8 weeks in an admin assistant course. Her graduation happened to fall on my birthday, and I was so happy to share the day with her. Her class' first assignment was to organize the graduation, so it was even more special. There was a powerpoint, a keynote speaker, lots of inspirational quotes, and so many happy tears.

The graduates for this program weren't like any other graduates. This isn't the kind of class someone takes because they have to or because someone expects it of them. All of these students took the class to improve their skills, to learn, and to push themselves to achieve greatness. Mom's fellow graduates were mostly middle-aged women, with kids and grandkids sitting in the audience cheering them on. My mom worked ridiculously hard in this class--often harder than I ever did in college. I'm so proud of her and can't wait to see what she does next. There was a part of the graduation ceremony where family members were invited to speak about their graduate. My dad and I stood up at the same time to talk about mom, but he decided I should talk since he said I'm better at public speaking and he would just get emotional. Well, I started talking and immediately broke down in tears. I really wanted everyone to hear what I had to say, so I kept trying to finish, which just made everyone else cry. It was all very emotional, but in the best way.

After her graduation, we went to Kerbey Lane for cinnamon roll pancakes and mimosas. I ate way too much, especially knowing that Dago was taking me to dinner in a couple of hours. I came home and caught up on blog posts until he got off work, and then we went to Austin Java for caesar salad chicken sandwiches. I was so spoiled in the food department, and I even had a cake at home waiting for us that Mom and Dad made me. A new Goodwill opened up in the area, so Dago and I went to see if they had anything good for us. They didn't, but the building has some of Austin's famous street art on the side, so we tried to take a selfie in front of it. We weren't quite ready to go home, so we stopped at the park I mentioned, before returning to our place for Contessa snuggles and Catfish. Before we went to bed, I made Dago sing happy birthday to my and light the candles on my cake so I could make a wish.

The next day, I went into work, as usual, and then was surprised by my coworkers with decorations, a homemade spice cake, and more happy birthday singing. I seriously work with the universe's kindest humans.

How creative and perfect are they? I'm absolutely the luckiest 24 year old that's ever lived.

Now that my birthday's over, I need to start getting ready for Dago's, which is in just a couple of weeks. We decided to not get each other anything, and instead buy each other dinner, but I might have gotten him a little something already. Let's just say I'll be checking the mail like a super sleuth until it arrives.

What have you been up to lately?

Second off, congratulations to your mama! Getting your GED is no easy feat, especially if you've been out of school for a long time. What a wonderful accomplishment!

  8. We always say we won't buy presents so we invented the tradition of buying the most useless present. I bought my other half a megaphone this year :) People think we're weird, I think we're hilarious :)
