daisy and the duke

top: Forever 21 // bralette: Aerie // shorts: Gap purchased via Poshmark (similar) // sandals: Steve Madden (love these!) // necklaces: Forever 21 and The Land of Salt

It may not be summer according to the calendar yet, but summer is definitely upon us here in Austin. It's barely June, and I'm already struggling to make outfits during the work week because I just want to wear shorts all the time. Luckily on the weekends, I can make up for it by wearing the outfits I've dreamed up all week.

I bought these shorts off Poshmark a few weeks ago when I realized that none of my clothes from last summer fit. (As I was writing this, Kendi posted the perfect piece lamenting the loss of the Perfect Pair of Shorts.) I'm trying to make summer fashion happen as quickly and inexpensively as possible as the heat wave sets in. Thankfully, these are the comfiest shorts I've ever worn. They are not, however, the Daisy Dukes of summers' past. These are probably the longest shorts I've ever owned, though they don't really look it in these photos and they still don't pass the fingertip test (legs for days was not always a good thing, my friends). They're a little baggy and get even more so as I wear them. This makes them a little harder to style because most of the tops I've bought require little short shorts just peeking out beneath them. But these are just so comfy!

So I wore them on a recent shopping trip to specifically find tops to go with them. A lot of cute tank tops out right now are cropped, or hit at a place on my hips that isn't so flattering with a pair of baggier shorts. I was stoked to find this red daisy print top at Forever 21. It's swingy, which makes it fit a little bit longer. It also fits a little lower, which gave me an excuse to show off a peekaboo of a pretty bralette and not feeling self-conscious about it.

As much as I resist "boho" looks the rest of the year, I can't help but be drawn to loosey-goosey, lightweight, less "buttoned up" as they say pieces in the summertime. Do you ever feel your style shift between seasons?

  1. This top looks really cute with those shorts. Poshmark is my favorite! I'm so over the cropped top thing. It doesn't work for pear shapes at all, especially one like me.

  4. Such a cute, breezy look! I definitely think my style relaxes a lot in the summer, whether I'm in a hot place or a cool one. I hope I can add the perfect denim shorts to my wardrobe for this summer :) I've actually never even heard of Poshmark, I'll have to check it out!

  5. I love that top. I had that same thing happen to me this year. Tried on every single pair of shorts from last summer and none fit, and shorts are just the absolute worst to shop for. I usually have to size up, I want them to have some give so I can be active in them and they don't cut into my thighs but I don't want the leg opening too big because that defeats the purpose of shorts and looks weird...endless specifications that make the perfect pair impossible to find. Sigh. I feel your struggle girl.

  12. Love this look! So cute. And I'm not sure if my style varies per season or it's more like I'm continuing to refine my look. But it's an interesting concept!

  13. Great find! I'm confused, what is a bralette? I don't think I've ever heard the term before...

  14. I am SO jealous of your legs/ability to wear shorts!! There are so many cute shorts this season, and I'm so tempted but ... nope. Noooo. I'd hate ya, but you're too adorable ;)

  15. This is pretty much my summer weeken uniform (with the addition of my fedora). Southern summers are sooooo stinkin' hot, so what else is there to wear other than a cute tank, shorts, and sandals?
Please please, if you ever find a cheapo version of that clear stone necklace, let a girl know! I searched ebay up and down yesterday with no luck :(

  16. the shop i bought the necklace from (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheLandofSalt) is closed until this weekend, but the necklace was only like $15 i think. that was the whole reason i bought it because it was significantly less expensive than anything i'd seen. it's actually really great quality too! bookmark it to check out after June 7!

  17. not in a creepy way, but i see your legs in cute little dresses all the time! i don't think anyone gets to tell you that you're not allowed to wear shorts--including you! if it's hot, and there are cute shorts you want, i say buy 'em and wear 'em!

  18. a bralette is like a little lacey bra (kind of like a bandeau or sports bra) with no real support in the form of an underwire, padding, adjustable straps, etc. i love the ones from aerie! http://www.ae.com/aerie/browse/category.jsp?catId=cat4850006

  19. it is so hard to find shorts that are flattering, so lately I find myself gravitating towards rompers/skirts/dresses... aka anything but shorts. But you've got such long legs & totally pull these off

  20. Only $15? Really?? I would have sworn last time you linked the shop it was like $30! I'll definitely be ordering one once they're back open if it's only $15. Its one of those necklaces that could be worn so much!

  22. I totally hear you on the "legs for days" problem. That's part of the reason I rarely wear shorts - they always fit me so awkwardly!!! And that top you're wearing here is just lovely!!
